Toyota takes top spot in Interbrand's 'Green Brands' Report

Five out of ten brands selected by Interbrand as the Best Global Green Brands of 2013 are automotive companies. With offices around the world Interbrand is the world’s largest brand consultancy, working with the biggest brands. To choose the 50 Best Global Green Brands Interbrand starts with the 100 brands that make up its annual Best Global Brands report and conducts extensive consumer research to capture public opinion of the brand's sustainable or green practices and compares that to performance data provided by Deloitte regarding the companies’ environmental sustainability practices.

"The report provides leading brands with the insights they need to develop robust strategies - strategies that will not only drive their businesses forward, but also have a positive impact on the environment and communities in which those businesses operate," stated Jez Frampton, global chief executive officer of Interbrand.

Toyota took top honors for 2013 with, Ford and Honda coming in second and third on the list. Nissan and Volkswagen were selected fifth and seventh respectively. The auto industry has done a great job of communicating its innovations and commitment to manufacturing vehicles in a sustainable way. Brands that have worked to creat innovative products using alternative energy (eg, Toyota Prius, Ford EcoBoost and Nissan LEAF) receive more consumer awareness for their efforts.Toyota, was chosen as the first Best Global Green Brand for the third consecutive year. The Toyota Prius continues to dominate the hybrid vehicle market. The company sold more than 2.9 million Prius models worldwide in 2012. Toyota is also developing a low-carbon society called Toyota Ecoful Town in Toyota City, Japan. From reducing greenhouse gas emissions to using reusable metal containers for shipping and distribution, Toyota is a leading example of what can be achieved - both in terms of performance and consumer awareness - when a company makes sustainability a vital part of its business strategy.

Nissan was top riser on this year's report. Jumping 16 points the manufacturer of the Nissan LEAF broke into the top ten and took fifth place. Ford made the list for their line of EcoBoost engines available on nine Ford models for 2013.

For some automotive manufacturers “going green” is primarily a matter of staying in compliance with federal and state regulations but other car builders are leading the way towards sustainable transportation.
