Subaru Forrester Selected Motor Trend SUV of the Year for 2nd Time

2014 Motor Trend SUV of the Year2014 Subaru Forrester - Motor Trend SUV of the Year

Subaru became the only manufacturer to have three wins for SUVs in Motor Trend’s Sport/Utility of the Year award with the selection of the 2014 Subaru Forrester for this year’s award. Previous winners include the 2010 Outback and 2009 Forrester, which also makes them the only manufacturer with back-to-back wins.

Vehicles are only eligible if they are sold in the US and are all new or substantially redesigned for the 2014 model year. Motor Trend tests and compares the SUVs in paved and dirt road conditions as well as on a test track. The magazine's writers and editors then select a winner based on six criteria: design advancement, engineering excellence, performance, efficiency, safety, and value. The other vehicles tested were the Acura MDX, Audi Q5, BMW X1, Buick Encore, Dodge Durango, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Mini Paceman S ALL4, and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Motor Trend’s editors wrote, "The Forester combines the practicality of a small, wisely engineered SUV with the fun enthusiasts will enjoy."  The magazine noted that its off-road abilities were "plenty for the majority of sport utility buyers." Editors also noted the Forrester’s excellent crash test results and interior features including visibility, step-in height, and durable materials.

The main drawbacks include towing power (only 1500 pounds) and wind noise. But the new Forrester still offers more power than previously with improved fuel economy and ground clearance of 8.7”, matching that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which wasn’t in consideration because it didn’t get to production in time. The Forrester also won high praise for value. With as tested prices of $24,320 and $28,320 the Forrester was faster at the track than either the more expensive Acura MDX or the BMW X1.  Motor Trend isn’t the only publisher to appreciate the Forrester either. Consumer Reports picked the vehicle as their top scoring small SUV earlier this year noting that the Forrester offers, “the easiest access and the best view out of almost any vehicle we've recently tested,” and, “It also has one of the roomiest rear seats in the class, with copious amounts of head and leg room.”
