When Edmunds released the results of their 5th annual Edmunds.com Best Retained Value Awards last month Acura and Toyota owners were very pleased. The awards seek to highlight the makes and models that retain the highest residual sales values after five years as a percentage of average transaction prices when new.

“Smart car shoppers who are likely to sell their car within five years should always stop and consider projected residual values before making a new car purchase,” Edmunds.com Consumer Advice Editor Carroll Lachnit said in a statement. “Whether you are leasing or buying, the retained value of a car can make a big difference in your wallet.”

This year, Toyota bested Subaru, GMC, and Honda to take home the non-luxury title as the overall brand with the highest average projected residual values after five years at 52.4%.  Acura won the title for the luxury segment with a projected value of 46.9%, beating out runners up Lexus and Porsche. In addition to the brand level awards, Edmunds also singled out winners in 24 separate vehicle segments.
