The New York Auto Show started this week with hundreds of new car previews, concept cars, and special announcements.  One of these events was the awarding of the 2014 World Car Awards to the best 5 autos in the world. Finalists were announced last month at the Geneva Auto Show. The winners were chosen by a panel of automotive journalists from around the world.

The 2014 World Car Award Winners:

2014 World Car of the Year

2014 Audi A3 – Audi has won a total of seven times in the 10 years the World Car Awards have been run. Jurors observed that the A3 offers classic lines and refined interiors noting, “With a superb choice of engines and 4 body styles, the A3 range packs a hefty premium punch in the small luxury segment.

“The Audi A3 showcases Audi’s technical competence in all aspects of car making, not least in the areas of lightweight technology, drivetrain, mobile infotainment and driver assistance systems,” Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG.

2014 World Green Car of the Year

2014 World Car Design of the Year

2014 BMW i3 – presented by Bridgestone Corporation the World Green Car of the Year award takes into consideration tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption, and use of a major advanced power plant technology (beyond engine componentry), aimed specifically at increasing the vehicle's environmental responsibility. The BMWi3 won because of its carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body shell without a B-pillar and “outside-the-box” looks, construction, and powertrain designed for efficiency.

The World Design Car of the Year award highlights new vehicles with innovation and style that push established boundaries. The experts noted that the, “i3 has a boxy shape, which suggests roominess and efficiency. But it still retains BMW’s typical dynamism thanks to the larger diameter wheels and the very short overhangs both on front and rear…The interior is more surprising and attractive. It marks radical leap of car interior design, and it spreads as calm yet rich feeling as a modern living room.”

2014 World Performance Car of the Year

2014 Porsche 911 GT3 – In a category of supercars the 911 GT3 was chosen because, “The latest 911 GT3 is 100 percent at home on any track, with surprising buckets of fine balance and handling prowess even with the engine theoretically in the “wrong” place.”

2014 World Luxury Car of the Year

2014 Mercedes-Benz S Class – 2014 is the first year for the World Luxury Car Award. Jurors observed that Mercedes won because, “…the challenge of the sixth-generation S-Class was to be even better than the fifth-gen model. They did it by creating a car so far advanced in this segment that competitors pretty much have ceased trying to go head-to-head with the S.”
